Description The
second largest of the big cats. Full-grown males measure up to 10 feet
in length from the tip of he tail to the nose. Males regularly exceed
400 pounds. Females range from 275 to 400 pounds. Males mostly have thick
manes as a indication of gender from long distances.
Diet Lions
are often referred to as ‘opportunistic hunters’, eating whatever they
can catch for themselves or steal from other predators. Prey
include zebras, wilderbeasts and antelope.
Location Found mainly in Africa. An isolated group of white lions has been identified in South Africa.
Habitat
Defining features Lions have always been respected by man for their nobility, courage, loyalty, combative skills and sexual prowess.
Threat Lions are not currently under threat but may be so unless trade is regulated. |
